The most important part of any keyboard case is the keyboard, and I am happy to report that it is good. Apple calls this the Magic Keyboard, which, in part, is meant to let you know that it uses the same scissor-switch mechanism you’ll find on its other Magic Keyboards for the iMac and 16-inch MacBook Pro. This isn’t the dreaded butterfly switch keyboard from older MacBook Pros, nor is it the fabric-covered keyboard still found on the Smart Keyboard Folio for the iPad Pro. There’s good key travel and a relatively satisfying thunk. In fact, I think Apple may have explicitly decided to give up on the cult of thinness on this product in order to improve the keyboard’s feel. This isn’t identical to the new Magic Keyboard on the 16-inch MacBook Pro, however. The keys do have just an itty-bitty bit of wobble to them, but not enough to be a concern. Jun 03, 2020 ·  Alongside the iPad Pro 2020, Apple announced its most lavish accessory yet. The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is a floating keyboard for its latest tablet that happens to cost £300. 

The floating cantilever is a lovely Apple flourish from a company that almost forgot it used to have fun with its product design. Not only does it look cool, it helps elegantly solve the weight distribution issue while letting you adjust the screen angle on a hinge. But it's not the most practical or flexible decision. You're not stuck with the two fixed angles of the Smart Keyboard Folio, but there still isn't much room for manoeuvre. You also can't fold the Magic Keyboard back on itself when not in use. Instead, you have to detach the iPad off the keyboard completely when you want to do something with just the tablet. This, coupled with the narrow angles to adjust the screen, indicate that the Magic Keyboard was designed for desk use. On my lap, with the iPad tilted right back, the weight meant it kept tipping backwards away from me. On a laptop, all the weight is in the base, whereas here the base is only heavy because it's supporting the full weight of an enormous floating iPad....

For a keyboard that costs so much, it’s a bit disheartening to see that it's made out of the same soft-touch rubber material asthe Smart Keyboard Folio. Like the Smart Keyboard Folio, the Magic Keyboard is clad in a rather drab-looking grey soft-touch rubber, that, though pleasing to touch, is a bit of a concern for long-term longevity. I’m sceptical of soft-touch rubber because I have had many bad experiences with other devices with similar housings and they have degraded and become sticky over time. Fortunately, this hasn’t happened to any of my older Smart Keyboard Folios but I think it’s worth pointing out considering its cost. There are, however, some upsides to this. Compared to an all-steel construction, the use of soft-touch rubber adds lesser thickness and weight to the iPad Pro, which is absolutely crucial considering how Apple has gone to great lengths to make its flagship tablet so thin and light. According to my measurements, the Magic Keyboard adds about 6mm and 700g,...
