Love it or hate it, last year’s Huawei Matebook X Pro made a big splash when it arrived on Australian shores. It was the Chinese brand’s first workhorse PC pitched at Australian consumers. We said in our review at the time that if you were looking for a simple-to-use, no-fuss laptop that’ll get everyday tasks done, the Matebook X Pro is polished to near perfection. Huawei’s inevitable follow-upis pitched at a slightly-different crowd, but no less compelling. While last year’s Matebook X Pro was for those who needed the best, the new Matebook 13 is built for pretty much everyone else. It’s a high-quality, do-it-all workhorse laptop that you can probably afford. 

The HUAWEI MateBook 13 is a pretty impressive laptop. But unlike our previous reviews where we were usually smitten by a laptop’s hardware, what makes the HUAWEI MateBook 13 amazing isn’t the hardware, but the software which makes it unique. 

Our review unit is the highest specced version available over here in Europe, alongside the base-level model that you can also find in stores, with the Core i5-8265U processor, still 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage and no dedicated graphics. Update: The 2020 MateBook 13 builds on the same design and characteristics, but gets significantly more competent Nvidia GeForce MX350 graphics.

The Huawei MateBook 13's screen is one of its most unusual elements, primarily because of its shape. This is a 3:2 display. Most laptops are 16:9 or 16:10, for a much more widescreen look. 

If you own a compatible Huawei device that supports the OneHop sharing function, you’re in for a treat with the MateBook 13. OneHop is an NFC based file sharing system where you can almost instantaneously transfer files from your Huawei device (in my testing, the Huawei P30) to the MateBook. 

Huawei MateBook 13 Review – Heat. The Huawei MateBook 13 can get a bit warm, but not too hot. After 15 minutes of streaming Full-HD video on the laptop, our heat gun caught cool temperatures on its touchpad (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and keyboard (90.5 degrees), but its bottom reached 97 degrees, and barely exceeded our 95 degrees comfort threshold. 

To evaluate the performance of the Huawei MateBook 13, we will be comparing its performance against the current crop of ultraportable notebooks like the ASUS ZenBook 14 UX434, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, and HP Spectre x360. Here are the configurations of the tested notebooks and how they stack up.
