So we’re surprised to discover that JBL’s Flip 5 arrives with fewerfeatures than its predecessor, the Flip 4. Gone is the analogue aux-in port for wired listening, for example. That’s not a huge issue – wireless is clearly the way forward in 2020 – but JBL has also axed the microphone that was used for voice control and hands-free calls. That makes the Flip 5 essentially justa Bluetooth (4.2) speaker – albeit one with a USB-C charging port and cable. This port helps lower the charging time to just 2.5 hours from flat to fully juiced. That's an hour quicker than the Flip 4 despite the Flip 5's battery being much bigger (4800mAh compared to 3000mAh). Interestingly, though, the extra juice doesn’t lend any more stamina to the new model – battery life stays at a claimed 12 hours.

Well, they do have a signature design of JBL speakers. Many details have changed in the new series of Charge and Flip since last models, but not in the design’s field. Sony promises its Bluetooth speakerwill keep going pretty much whatever you throw at it. An IP67 waterproof rating means it is not only resistant to both fresh and salt water but should also survive a thorough washing if you get it mucky. That’s useful because the SRS-XB33 also tempts you to introduce it to the dirt. It’s dustproof, so sand, soil and dried mud are of little concern, and it has undergone extensive shock testing for knocks, bumps and scrapes, meaning you can drop it and it’ll keep working. Sony claims a whopping 24-hour maximum battery life for the SRS-XB33, with up to 14 hours of action with the volume at maximum and the bells and whistles switched on. Those include some flashing lights – controlled via the Sony Music Center and Fiestable apps – which can also dance in sync with up to 99 other compatible wireless speakers thanks to Party Connect. Eye-catching as those are, we’re here for the music – and Sony has put plenty of effort into how the SRS-XB33 sounds.

Quite a lot of speakers in this class are made of metal. The Bose SoundLink Miniseries drew up a blueprint that others have tweaked, but Sony isn’t playing copycat. The Sony SRS-XB3 is made of plastic and rubber, injecting a touch of personality with colour instead. There’s the dark-green version seen here, as well as black, red and blue. All but the red are quite moody and subdued in tone, leaving the red version for those who are after something that really stands out. A plastic frame isn’t exciting, but the Sony SRS-XB3 feels like it could withstand being thrown against a wall. The plastic is thick, and will easily handle being scraped carelessly across hard surfaces much better than aluminium. The speaker appears to be far better equipped for outdoor use than most, and is also water-resistant. The Sony SRS-XB3 is certified to IPX5, meaning it can handle rain or being splashed, but it can’t be submerged. Actual IPX5 testing involves spraying the speaker with 12.5-litres of water...
