Like the PowerShot G5 X II announced at the same time, the PowerShot G7 X Mark II has a 20.1Mp 1-inch type stacked CMOS sensor. This is a new sensor design for Canon and combined with the Canon Digic 8 processing engine, it enables very fast continuous shooting rates. Again like the PowerShot G5 X II, the G7 X III can shoot at up to 30fps (frames per second) in RAW Burst Mode for up to 70 images. Alternatively, it can shoot at 20fps for up to 89 C-RAW files, 55 RAW images or 118 Jpegs. This sensor is fronted by an 8.8 – 36.8mm f/1.8-2.8 stabilised lens which has a 35mm focal length equivalence of 24 – 100mm. The 24mm end is a good option for arm’s-length video when looking at the screen flipped-up above the camera. The large aperture also enables the background to be blurred a little.

Sometimes you just gel with a camera and the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is one of those cameras for me. I love it. It’s small enough to slip in a jacket pocket yet has a viewfinder built-in, an excellent control arrangement and a flip-up touchscreen. It’s also 4K-enabled without a crop factor and it captures great images. If I was being really picky, I’d like a mic port, and it would be lovely if it was weatherproof. But even without those points, I think it’s a great little camera.

While we didn’t review the PowerShot SX60 HS, we did review its predecessor, the SX50 HS, which had a 50x optical zoom lens. Canon PowerShot SX70 HS – Performance The SX70 HS powers up in less than a second and shuts down in a similar time, although the latter does depend on the position of the zoom. 

The most noticeable upgrades are the image and video resolution. On the image front, the SX70 HSsports a 20.1MP sensorCanon smartly made it 4k capable, thanks largely in part to the new DIGIC 8 image processor. The increased processing power and speed also allows the new camera to capture images at 10fps, an upgrade of 3.9fps from the previous model. Once I got the SX70 HS out of the box, the first thing I noticed is that it felt slightly smaller and lighter than other superzoom cameras — especially the almost ridiculously oversized Nikon COOLPIX P1000which many people compare it to. Still, it manages to not be so light that it feels too cheap. The new rocker switch on the left side of the lens is a good backup option to the classic dial around the shutter button. Not only does it give you a second button to use for zoom, but you can also assign it to control the manual focus distance, something that is somewhat handy at times. However, if you were hoping it would help provide smoot...

The Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is a bridge camera. That means it combines some of the features of an interchangeable lens camera with those of a compact camera. So while it is fairly compact and has a fixed zoom lens, it looks like a small SLR. The ace in the PowerShot SX70 HS’s sleeve, however, is its 65x zoom range. Nikon has two such cameras with ultrazoom. Coolpix P1000 with 125 x zoom (!), And this one, Coolpix P950 with 83 x zoom. Apart from the zoom, they are almost identical, but the P950 is smaller, lighter and cheaper. The larger P1000 has a zoom ring on the front of the lens, but otherwise the differences are small. 24-2000mm

The new Nikon Coolpix A1000 replaces the previous A900 model from 2016, principally adding an EVF, two extra zoom controls, touchscreen control and RAW recording. In terms of size and weight, the A1000 is subsequently slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessor, measuring 114.2 x 71.7 x 40.5mm and weighing 330g, but we feel that this slight increase is worth it given the inclusion of the EVF. Or it would be, if the EVF wasn't quite such a disappointment. Maybe we've been spoiled by the viewfinder on the admittedly much more expensive Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI, but the one of the Coolpix A1000 only has half the resolution, 1166k-dots versus 2350k-dots on the Sony, in the same 0.5cm sized viewfinder. This results in a rather grainy display that is really only suitable for light, rather than all-day, use. The EVF does feature a handy sensor that detects when you hold the camera up to your eye and automatically switches from the rear LCD screen to the EVF. Alternatively, you can use...
