The Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 wireless earbuds simply blew us away, with a sound performance to rival even the best over-ear headphones. Cheaper than the Apple AirPods, they’re a fantastic option... 

Cambridge Audio’s focus has long been on sonic deliverance over appearance, and so functional is perhaps the best that can be said about the Melomania 1s’ aesthetic. With a ‘stone’ grey hue, they look and feel slightly medical, though they are also available in a more fetching black finish, with the only visual flourishes being a pulsating light which shines around the edge of each earpiece. The little in-ears snap reassuringly into their charging case with the aid of magnets, while another magnet keeps the case lid shut. The case is only marginally bigger than a box of dental floss – ideal for slipping into your pocket – and features a horizontal set of five lights to indicate the battery charge level. With nine hours battery life from the buds themselves, plus four additional charges from the case, that means an impressive 45 hours of continuous use from this little set-up. 1. The first thing to notice about the Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 headphones is their design, and they’re pretty interesting in that respect. Both the headphones and the charging case are built from a gray plastic reminiscent of classic computers, but it’s not a bad look. They’re also available in black, for those that prefer the black build. The charging case is relatively small — certainly smaller than most of its competitors, coming in at 2.3 x 2 x 0.87 inches. That makes the headphones easily pocketable. On the left of the case, you’ll find the MicroUSB port. We would have liked to see a USB-C portinstead of MicroUSB. On the front, there are five LED lights to indicate how charged the headphones are. The actual earbuds themselves are pretty small, but not as small as the charging case is relatively to competitors. Their earplug-like design isolates an impressive amount of noise, which makes them very good for commuting, but their fit won’t be comfortable for everyone so they might be best for shorter trips.

Cambridge Audio makes a good start in the True-Wireless arena. Melomania 1 is a well-tuned system with good codecs and useful features. The price is absolutely competitive, proving it doesn’t always have to be Apple. With the importance of accuracy of fit, I would absolutely recommend a personal test.

Cambridge Audio definitely lives up to our expectations when it comes to the Melomania Touch wireless headphones. The developer borrowed the main design cues of the Cambridge Audio Melomania Touch from the earlier successful Melomania 1 , which many rightfully consider one of the best in the 2019 list of wireless headphones.
