Go back a few decades and headphones were often flimsy-looking with fuzzy earpads or big, chunky cans that clamped onto your ears. Suffice to say, headphone technology has come on a long way since. This is no more evident than with the Earin M-2. These earphones are incredibly small, lightweight and packed full of technology – an ambitious pair of true wireless in-ears that aspire to challenge Apple’s AirPods. The question is, are they the real deal? 

Available in black or silver-and-white, the M-2 earphones ship with a cylindrical charging case with a slide-out drawer that houses the dock for the earpieces. Internally, the earpieces deliver audio through Knowles balanced armature drivers. There's no left or right earpiece—they're interchangeable. Controls on either ear are relatively simple, as well as the same regardless of earpiece. A single tap plays or pauses music, or answers calls. A double tap rejects incoming calls or ends current calls. Two taps skips a track, and three taps goes backward a track. Google Assistant or Siri can be accessed with a long press. There's no way to adjust volume on the earpieces, which is frustrating, but there's not much real estate to work with here—these earpieces are tiny. And unless you check in the app the only notification you get is a single set of bleats through the earphones a few minutes before they bow out.

The overall design of M-2 generally retains the style of M-1. Like the M-1, the M-2 earbuds are stored in a cylindrical casing that slides shut with magnets, and looks more minimalistic with black aluminium finishing. Instead of using the back of the earbuds as charging contacts, the M-2 earbuds contains small contact pins for charging. This allows the back of the earbuds to be converted to a touch panel, angled so that they appear aligned with the ears when the earbuds are worn. I quite like the tube-like container: like a pen (or cigar), I can slip the Earin in my pocket yet easily reach for it. In the original Earin M-1, there are 2 essential yet missing features resulting in its less-than-appealing choice. Fortunately, M-2 makes it up and has them: built-in mic for voice calls, and touch control for playback. Tap once for play-pause or answer call, double-tap to change track or hang up, triple-tap to back track, and long-press to invoke smartphone voice assistant. There is still...
