First up we have Cinebench R20 and I think the results seen here are going to be quite telling for raw multi-core performance. In its default configuration the 10900K scored 6101 pts and that made it 25% faster than the 3700X and 9900K. Meanwhile enabling MCE boosted performance by a further 5% which is pretty typical for this setting. When compared to the 3900X, the 10900K was 19% slower, so that means it’s positioned between the 8 and 12-core Ryzen processors and while that’s hardly stocking news, it’s a rough place for Intel new 10-core part to end up given the 3900X can regularly be found on sale for a little over $400, making it cheaper and faster. But before we draw any serious conclusions, let’s move on to check out a lot more data. The 10900K is very strong in single core performance, thanks to that 5.3 GHz clock frequency. Intel’s 10thGen chips use a design called Comet Lake, but underneath all of that, they actually use a refinement of the Skylake architecture that’s been around since 2015. The older underlying architecture means that Intel hasn’t made wholesale changes for its 10thGen parts – they still use the same 14nm manufacturing process, while AMD moved to 7nm for its Zen 2 chips. Intel 10thGen concentrates on more cores, more Hyper-Threading and more boosting – alongside thermal improvements. The i9-10900K has ten Hyper-Threaded cores – two more cores than its predecessor, the Intel Core i9-9900K. Its 3.7GHz base clock speed is 100MHz higher than that older chip, and it has 20MB of L3 cache – four extra megabytes. The new chip uses existing Turbo Boost 2.0 technology to reach an all-core Turbo speed of 4.9GHz and a single-core Turbo speed of 5.1GHz, with those speeds 200MHz and 100MHz better than the i9-9900K respectively. After slapping on a healthy overclock to reach 5.1 GHz at 1.355V, we see that the CPU now draws 207.66W on average throughout the 15-minute Realbench stress test.

And, what a valiant effort it is, bringing in a whopping 10 cores and 20 threads – that’s two extra cores over its predecessor, the Core i9-9900K – alongside boost clocks of up to 5.3GHz across one or two cores.

So, in practical terms, with the Corie i9 10900K what all this means is that the all-core boost is now 4.9Ghz, five core (aka half the cores active) boost is 5.0Ghz, three core boost is 5.1Ghz, and dual or single core boost is 5.2Ghz. Yes, it is confusing. 

Build one The original plan was to simply swap the CPU, but I after playing games for a couple of hours, the PC would start making a whining noise and then just randomly shut down. There wasn't even a blue screen. When I did see a blue screen was when running some benchmarks and the CPU got too hot. So I went and got some new parts. As I noted in my Core i5 review, parts are hard to come by these days, which is why it took me so long to write this. Stores are closed, shipments are delayed from online orders, and so on. Build two As you can see, the parts I needed for the second build were more expensive, and I also jacked up the GPU and the RAM. There's no thermal compound listed, since the Noctua U12A came with Noctua's own. Swapping out the CPU cooler and the PSU made a huge difference. There was no more overheating, and in fact, I had to work hard to even get the Core i9-10900K to run hot. The U12A is a phenomenal cooler. With the Intel cooler, it idled at around 52 degrees Celsi...
