JBL Bar 5.1 Surround is among the most powerful soundbars in its class. Not least thanks to the powerful subwoofer with 10-inch bass element. But also the soundbar itself can be driven long before it gives way. It rumbles and crashes well in the TV corner, and the sound also has its qualities.

In our analysis of 65 expert reviews, the JBL JBL Bar 5.1 Channel 4K Ultra HD Soundbar placed 5th when we looked at the top 17 products in the category. 

JBL bills its Bar 9.1 as (natch) a “9.1-channel soundbar,” but it’s more accurately described as a 5.1.4 system: In addition to the traditional left, center, right, rear surround and low-frequency effects channels (the “5.1” part), you also get front and rear height channels (the “.4” at the end). On the main soundbar unit, the left, right, and center channels are powered by four racetrack (or oval-shaped) full-range drivers and three one-inch tweeters, while a pair of upfiring drivers supply audio for two of the four height channels. The two remaining height channels come from the upfiring drivers in the two wireless surround speakers, each of which comes equipped with one-inch tweeters. Those (total) four upfiring drivers provide the height effects for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the two competing immersive audio formats that the JBL Bar 9.1 supports. The smallest of a four-product range, the Studio is easy to accommodate. At around 60cm in length and just under 6cm in height, it will slot under most suitably sized TVs without appearing undernourished, and has been crafted to JBL’s usual high standards of quality and aesthetic modernity. Across the top you’ll find the basic controls for power, volume and source selection, with HDMI (ARC) and optical sockets to the rear. Bluetooth is also on board, potentially negating the need for a separate living room sound system. The Studio’s size obviously restricts the scale of its sound, with drivers kept to two tweeters and single woofer - but two reflex ports help reinforce its low-end output.
