Mullvad has just one pricing plan at €5 ($5.40) per month. It offers a strong feature set, with both security and convenience features, with a very simple pricing structure. But is Mullvad better than the big-name providers? 

Mullvad is run by Amagicom AB and is based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company was founded by Fredrik Strömberg and Daniel Berntsson who, according to the Mullvad about page, “are actively involved in the company.” The rest of the team is also listed on this page. Mullvad’s privacy policy is written in very clear language. Nearly all logs from the servers are sent to dev > null, a nonexistent directory in Linux systems, and a common way to stop unwanted data from being saved. The no-logging policy extends to your IP address, the VPN IP address used, browsing activity, bandwidth, connections, session duration, timestamps, and DNS requests. During a session Mullvad says it has to store your account number, your account’s paid time remaining, and how many simultaneous connections are being used per account. May 02, 2021 ·  In the previous Mullvad VPN review, I complained about a small server network and the lack of dedicated apps for both iOS and Android. However, that’s all been taken care of now. One thing Mullvad does better than any VPN out there is anonymity. You don’t even have to provide an email address to get started. 

May 17, 2021 ·  Mullvad VPN is one of the most private VPN services that we have reviewed. In my opinion, Mullvad VPN is doing a great job of providing a model for other VPNs to follow. Too many VPNs these days require long term subscriptions to be affordable and focus too much on unlocking streaming platforms.

Mullvad is a VPN provider situated in Sweden (a “14 eyes” country) that mainly focuses on privacy. They take their mission very seriously: you don’t even need an email address to register for an account. On their website, Mullvad will provide you with a unique code that allows you to log in and get a paid subscription. Paying can also be done anonymously. Besides this very private system, Mullvad is also ahead of the game when it comes to VPN protocols. Mullvad users can choose to use the WireGuard protocol, for example. This protocol was developed specifically for Linux users and is expected to perform even better than IPsec and OpenVPN. 

Mullvad isn’t big on extra features or services compared to other VPNs. It doesn’t promise to get past Netflix VPN restrictions (though sometimes it does), there aren’t any double-hop connections, smart DNS, or other specialty services. Instead, Mullvad focuses on giving you a solid VPN connection and it does that job very well. There are, however, a few options you can find under the settings cog icon in the panel’s upper-right corner. Under Settings > Preferencesthere are options to auto-connect when Windows starts, or automatically connect when you open Mullvad. Both are off by default. Under this section there’s also a handy option to enable your PC’s sharing options even though you’re on a VPN.
