This is a guest review of the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art by wedding photographer Megan Allen. One of my favorite lenses has always been a mid-length telephoto prime. Back when I shot on Canon, the Canon 135mm f/2 was a staple in my bag.

Competing in the ring of ultimate portrait primes, Sigma’s latest Art lens is up against pro-grade favourites, including the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM, Nikon AF-S 105mm f/1.4E ED and Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master. The Sigma overshadows them all, if only in physical size and weight: it’s heavier than most 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto zooms.

Any photographic lens is an exercise in compromise. Price, size, image quality, and features all have to be balanced to hit a goal. For the Sigma Art series, that has always been to deliver the best quality at a price that beats, or at least does not exceed, that of equivalent first-party lenses — with little regard paid to size. Weighing in at a hair over 2 pounds, the 20mm Art is certainly no lightweight, but that’s the price you pay for a bright f/1.4 aperture and an excellent optical formula. The 15 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical elements, two of Sigma’s “F” Low Dispersion elements, and five Special Low Dispersion elements, ensure sharp, aberration-free images with minimal distortion. The lens body measures 3.6 inches in diameter by 5.1 inches long, including a built-in, petal-style lens hood. Nov 17, 2020 ·  Compared to the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG HSM Art, which is one of the largest and heaviest 85mm lenses we’ve tested, Sigma’s latest example is far more compact and discards a vast amount of weight. To be precise, the E-mount version that we were sent for review works out 30mm shorter in length and 500g lighter than Sigma’s previous version.
