Jan 08, 2020 ·  Nearly six years later, the A6100 brings a host of improvements, sharing many of the same upgrades featured in latest mid-range A6400 and top-end A6600 bodies. However, these improvements don't come cheap, as the A6100 is nearly twice the price of the original A6000, somewhat limiting its appeal as an entry-level camera. 

Cutting-edge design isn’t an integral part of Sony’s A6000 series. This is a black brick that looks and feels like every other model in the line-up other than the new A6600, which has a deeper grip and more potent battery. Familiarity doesn’t breed contempt as the A6100 is quite functional other than Sony’s usual idiosyncrasies, but it’s certainly not as pretty as the Fujifilm X-T30. The camera measures 4.75 x 2.75 x 2.4 inches and weighs 14 ounces with memory card and battery installed. The A6100 uses the same E-mount as all Sony mirrorless cameras, both APS-C and full-frame models. That grants access to 54 native lenses from Sony, plus more from third parties like Sigma, Tamron, and Zeiss. Lens selection is a big advantage of Sony thanks to the E-mount being relatively mature, and it offers an easy upgrade path from APS-C to full-frame should you choose to make that move down the road. We connected the camera to a pair of slightly higher lenses – the FE 24-70mm f/4 and FE 35mm f/1.8 – both of which have a sensible size and weight. Depending on the lens, the A6100 is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.

Sony a6100 Review The Sony a6100, released 5 years after the wildly popular a6000, is an upgraded version that has a variety of new features while still retaining all the desirable qualities. The latest version has some major upgrades like a touch screen, selfie screen, and improved autofocus. 

From a physical standpoint, the Sony A6100 is strikingly similar to the A6000, with an altogether similar design and styling, button and control layout, as well as construction. Control layout and button placement on the A6100 is identical to that of the A6000, but with the notable upgrade to a touchscreen rear panel for easy touch AF functionality. The LCD remains a 3-inch TFT panel with 921,600 dots but it offers more versatility now in terms of its tilting angles, with 74 degrees of downward tilt as well as a full 180-degree upwards/front-facing angle. (The A6000's upward tilt was limited to about 90 degrees and thus could not face the front.) In terms of the built-in EVF, the A6100 uses the same 1440K-dot SVGA electronic viewfinder as the A6000 rather than the higher-res OLED EVFs of the pricier models. If there’s a need for higher fps for slow-mo video, switch to 1080p, which goes up to 120 fps. There are options to play it at 25%, 20% speed, or one fps.
