Jan 29, 2021 ·  The WD_Black P50 Game Drive SSD promised read speeds of up to 2000 MB/s. However, we got a read speed of 908.2 MB/s and a write speed of 916.2 MB/s. But compared to the WD My Passport SSD which has a USB 3.1 10Gb/s interface and read speed of up to 540MB/s, the performance for the P50 SSD is more than twice as fast. 

The product that we are reviewing today is the Western Digital P50 Game Drive, which is a portable external SSD that comes in 500GB/1TB/2TB capacities. Now you might be thinking to yourselves what’s so special about this drive? Well it’s one of the first external SSDs to feature the new USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface. 

Western Digital have also future proofed this product thanks to its Superspeed USB USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 with speeds of up to 20Gb/s. While you do need a system that supports this new interface, the WD Black P50 Portable Game Drive SSD is also backward compatible which means this drive will stick around in your artillery for a very long-time and oh… it also has a shock resistant case! 

In its core, the WD Black P50 Game Drive is just your normal everyday SSD. And of course that is going to blow away any hard drive you throw at it. I installed a number of games on a standard 7200RPM HDD and the same games on the WD Black P50 Game Drive and the difference is just astounding.

I thought the gaming experience would be slow and painful but instead, even at half the speed (on a USB 3.2 Gen2), the drive performs really well and even faster than running it from the usual 2.5″ SSD on SATA 3Gbps interface.
