The 27-inch iMac hasn't received the design overhaul that some rumours were suggesting following WWDC, but this 2020 update is considerably more than a mere speed bump. As well as adopting the latest 10th generation Intel processors, Apple has also updated almost every other aspect of the iMac as well, including the 5K Retina display, along with the GPU, storage, and even the webcam and microphones. The iMac's 5K display has always been its crowning glory, and the 27-inch iMac now gains the True Tonefeature already available on the MacBook Pro range, which uses sensors to monitor the ambient light throughout the day and automatically adjust the display to provide optimum levels of colour and brightness. You can also buy the new iMac with the same glare-reducing 'nano-texture' glass treatment found in Apple's eye-wateringly expensive ProDisplay XDR. The iMac 27-inch (2020) is Apple’s latest entry in its iconic lineup of all-in-ones, bringing a number of impressive upgrades that will particularly appeal to people working from home – which due to the Covid-19 pandemic is a growing number of us. We’d been expecting a new iMac in 2020, and Apple has delivered, especially when it comes to offering a boost in specifications, with the new all-in-one now coming with the latest 10th generation Intel Comet Lakeprocessors, speedy solid state drives (SSDs) across the board, powerful AMD Radeon Pro graphics cards and bags of RAM. For home workers, there’s also a new 1080p FaceTime HD webcam and studio-quality microphones, which make a big improvement to video calls, which are now an essential part of home working. Those two new features certainly got a workout during our time with the iMac 27-inch (2020), as we had multiple video meetings – and the results were very positive. While the new iMac is beautiful, it doesn't look all that different from its predecessors. The aluminum frame packs a 27-inch 5K Retina display, which, unfortunately, is surrounded by thick bezels. The nano-texture glass helps, though. Originally introduced in the Pro Display XDR, it gives the display a matte-like feel. But it'll cost you an extra $500 on top of the $1,800 starting price. I know that's a lotto pay for a feature that seems fairly minor, but after experiencing it, I can say it's worth it if you have the money. While it's not that noticeable unless you physically feel it, it gives the iMac an updated look. More importantly, it reduces glare and reflectivity, and makes everything look more vibrant. And, unlike the standard glossy display, it's not a fingerprint magnet. The adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix” is well versed in these parts, and it’s something that clearly applies to Apple’s latest computer, the 27 inch 2020 iMac. Simply put, if you stood it next to older iMacsand weren’t told about the new models, you’d have no way of knowing. In fact, the 2020 iMac 27 inch uses a design that came into play in 2012, and eight years on, it’s still a nice all-in-one design, offering a fantastically big screen featuring all the hardware underneath a curved back. Attached to a desk stand the likes of which would look more than normal on any other monitor, the iMac 27 inch looks just like any other screen for a desk, but happens to have a handy list of specs inside.
