These headphones immersed us in a near-perfect cone of silence — sounds had to be substantially louder than normal conversation tones to interrupt our listening experience. In addition to excellent noise cancellation, these headphones produce premium sound quality, expressing subtleties and nuances in everything from bass-heavy hip-hop to acoustic arrangements. Sony includes details that improve the user experience, like a sensor that automatically pauses your music when you remove the headphones and the ability to pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. The latter allows you to switch seamlessly between listening to music on your laptop and accepting a call on your phone. 
Our biggest gripe with the Sony WH-1000XM4 is the price. However, their price tag aligns with other premium noise-cancelling models. Also, the earcups on these are smaller than on some of the competitors, and we'd suggest those with particularly large ears check out the Bose models. Overall, though, we think the Sony WH-1000XM4 will best serve the vast majority of people shopping for high-quality noise-cancelling headphones.

Most people upgrade from earbuds to over ear headphones in search of better sound quality and more sound isolation. If you're looking for the best possible experience in both of those categories, we highly recommend the Sony WH-1000XM4. These headphones offer effective noise cancellation and clear and detailed audio quality throughout all of our tests. This ability gave us a new appreciation of familiar songs and provided us with a quiet and distraction-free listening environment. The audiophiles among us were very satisfied. Those looking for top-notch features won't be disappointed, either.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 are premium wireless headphones, and they ask a correspondingly premium price. Additionally, the earcups are just a bit smaller and less padded than those of the top Bose models, so if you have larger ears, you may want to direct your attention there. However, if you're willing to pay a bit extra for top-tier noise cancelling headphones, we highly doubt you can do much better than the Sony WH-1000XM4.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 is the latest iteration of a long line of great headphones, and it completely lives up to its manufacturer's reputation. Their sound quality is superb, providing crystal clear expression through the low, mid, and treble frequencies and offering a fine-tuned EQ that can balance that sound in any way you'd like. The noise cancellation is top of the line, providing us with a nearly silent listening environment throughout our testing, regardless of the amount of ambient noise. Sony also added some extra padding around the ears, which gives these a slightly more comfortable fit. These are our favorite daily-wear headphones, thanks to some user-friendly touches like the ability to connect to two Bluetooth devices at once and a sensor that automatically pauses your music when you take the headphones off.
The only bone we have to pick with these wireless headphones is their price. However, they're still not the most expensive on the market. Given their high level of performance and comfort, we think it's a reasonable ask. Those with larger ears may find the tips of their ears rubbing against the sides of the earcups, but our large-eared testers didn't find this sensation overly annoying. Bottom line, if you want a pair of top-notch headphones and are willing to pay accordingly, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is sure to please.

  Comfort: I wear these for hours straight and haven't found them uncomfortable or heavy.  Software Support: Not terrible but not great. For some reason, the "Headphone Connect" app (which is used to more finely control and configure these headphones) is only available on your phone; there is no desktop version. Within the app you can change the equalization profile, change what the general purpose button does (Google Assistant or Noise Cancellation mode), and update the firmware (UI for doing this isn't straightforward and buggy)

I've had these for about a year now so think I've experienced the majority of the good and bad of these headphones.  The tl;dr is do not buy these if you wanted to use them for headphones AND for calls/meetings; only buy these if you intend to use for music only.  Comfort: I wear these for hours straight and haven't found them uncomfortable or heavy.  Software Support: Not terrible but not great

 This particular issue is usually problematic in phone calls (Phone, Messenger and WhatsApp) rather than meetings (Zoom and Teams). - Randomly people can't hear me at all, whether the device is connected to my computer or my phone. Like the bad quality issue, disconnect/reconnect doesn't usually fix it and I end up giving up and just using the device speakers. - There's a bug in these where if I'm connected to two devices simultaneously and utilizing the call functionality on one of the devices, everything is fine for a few minutes and then voices in calls/meetings become evenly "choppy"; there's a complete break in call sound every 1 second

 Taking off/putting on the headphones correctly pauses/resumes music. Swiping the right cup correctly moves songs forwards/backwards and adjusts music. Holding my hand to the right cup lowers volumes and disables noise cancellation to hear the outside environment.  Music: - I'm not an audiophile but the sound quality seems good to me

Good Headphones For Music, Garbage For Calls and Meetings

 doesn't have a damn mute button. Sadly, the successor to this (the 1000XM5) has the same flaw.  Individually, the issues I raised wouldn't be enough for me to return the headset or give it a low rating. But for a $350 purchase, I expect it to be able to do what it says correctly

 It wasn't until I went downstairs that anyone said the quality of my voice had dropped. If I was less than 25 feet from the device, everything was great.  BATTERY LIFE: After a day of use it was down to about 50% and that impressed me. Then I watched TV and ate dinner and later that evening I put on the headphones and realized that the battery dropped to 10%

 And the ANC (active noise cancelling) was AMAZING. I could be sitting right next to a whole house fan and not hear it. I was blown away.  RANGE: Twice during the day I tried walking around while on a call

 But I wanted to also pair it to my desktop and laptop. The device supports pairing to two devices at the same time -- which was great -- but nearly every time I wanted to switch devices I had to literally turn off bluetooth so the headset would "let go". Other times, upon reconnecting, the mic wouldn't work. Once, which turned out to be the final straw for me, was when I could not get the headset to work in Teams no matter what I tried, even though it worked fine a few hours earlier
