As I said, from the outside the new Pure Base 500 cases look almost exactly like their predecessors. For my windowed gray test unit, that means a no-frills tower with beveled corners on the front. The case has a shiny metal front and top, with the rest being a somewhat duller gray. Air vents covered in black metal mesh run down the sides of the front panel to permit air to pass easily into the case. If you need additional airflow, the top of the case has a detachable metal cover that opens up almost the entire top pane. The Pure Base 600 shared these external design features, but it should be noted that the cover on the top of the 500 is easier to remove. On the older case, the top panel was fastened with a number of plastic tabs, but Be Quiet opted to use magnets to secure the top panel of the Pure Base 500, which means it can be removed in seconds. The right side panel is plain with no markings, but the panel on the left side of the case is made of tempered glass to give you a loo...

Sep 17, 2019 ·  With the Pure Base family, be quiet! has always offered products that aim to be more affordable but clearly hold the DNA of German engineering, quality, and performance. Having reviewed the Pure Base 600 in the past, we now get to take a look at the be quiet! Pure Base 500, which is available in three colors. We got the black variant for review. 

The front panel is plastic with a brushed texture, which is awesome for this price point. It also looks very premium without leaving a bunch of fingerprint marks. I appreciate the rounded corners both on top and the bottom of this front panel, it’s a little bit less conventional than be quiet’s usual designs, but it’s like an evolution of the Pure Base series. I also appreciate the matching metallic grey colour scheme for the dark out perimeter on the glass, so it hides whatever frame is underneath. As for the front I/O, it’s pretty basic with dual USB 3.0 ports, a power button, no reset button, and audio jacks. Unfortunately, there is no USB Type-C port, but the only case in this price category that actually has a Type-C port is the NZXT H510, but it does only have a single USB Type-A port. The Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma is pretty utilitarian in design, with one exception, which I’ll get to in a minute. Rectangular in shape with rounded corners, the dock is constructed from black anodized aluminum. As a result, it feels solid and has a nice weight to it. The dock itself is just under 7 /12-inches wide, just about three inches in depth, and barely over an inch in height. The front of the dock has a UHS-II SD card reader, a 3.5mm audio jack, and the Thunderbolt 4 USB-C upstream port. The bulk of the ports are found on the back of the dock. Here you have a power port, three Thunderbolt 4 USB-C downstream ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and three USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports. What is missing here are the usual DisplayPort and/or HDMI ports. While this is a Thunderbolt 4 port, it still would have been nice to see at least one DisplayPort on this first version as many monitors still feature DisplayPort and/or HDMI ports without having a USB-C port for video.
