The Lenovo Yoga 9i comes in strong at the tail end of 2020 as one of the best laptops of the year, giving us an early look at what Intel Evo is capable of while keeping things stylish and functional. Though it's a bit on the pricey side – especially with higher-end specs – it's hard to argue that the extra expense is pretty justified given the price. It's hard to argue with the design of the Yoga 9i, which is definitely one of the most stylish laptops we've seen this year, battling it out with the Dell XPS 13 (2020) and Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (2020)on the design front. On performance, the Yoga 9i's 11th-generation i7 outperforms just about everything else from this year, falling just short of the XPS 13 (2020) with 11th-generation Intel Evo on CPU performance, but beating it in terms of its graphics performance. We didn't get to test the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 with an 11th-gen Intel chip with Iris Xe graphics this year, so we can't say specifically how well the Yoga 9i stacks up against it'...

Users will recognize the general design language from the earlier Yoga C940. All the popular features are here: super-rigid CNC aluminum chassis, thin left/right display bezels, webcam bump, smooth left and right metal finish, and the soundbarthat also acts as a hinge. At 4.41 lbs (2Kg) and 19.7mm at its thickest point, it is probably not the lightest and smallest 15.6-inch laptop you can find, but it’s not easy to find an ultralight 15.6-inch laptop that packs this much power, so it’s not comparable unless you look at the performance per Lbs. As a Yoga laptop, the display can open 360-degrees to transform the Yoga 9i into a tablet-style computer. The integrated Pen makes this even more interesting as you can then take notes and sketch with speed and precision. On this 15.6-inch version, the integrated Pen is stored on the laptop’s right side, making it easy to access/store. The Pen’s charging happens in there, so you never run out of battery.

As with most rugged notebooks, the Panasonic Toughbook 54 meets the typical standards for MIL-STD-810G certification (surviving drops from a height of 3 feet, shock, vibration, sand, dust, altitude, high/low temperatures, high temperature tactical, temperature shock, and high humidity). Panasonic bills the Toughbook 54 as “the world’s lightest and thinnest semi-rugged laptopin its class” and this is indeed noticeably thinner and roughly a full 1-2 pounds lighter than any other rugged notebook that we’ve reviewed. If you’re wondering whether or not Panasonic had to make sacrifices to make this laptop so thin and light the answer is hidden in Panasonic’s description of the Toughbook 54 as a “semi-rugged” laptop. The screen lid and chassis are made from magnesium alloy, the hard drive is shock-mounted with flex connectors and there’s even a spill-resistant keyboard … but you won’t find all the added structural reinforcement and protection that we typically see in fully rugged notebooks...

Our Yoga C640 review unit was equipped with an Intel Core i5-10210U CPU and 8GB of RAM. Storage was handled by a Samsung 512GB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. On our standard benchmark tests, the review unit fared rather poorly even though we found its everyday performance very much up to the mark. Whenever someone asks me for a Windows alternative to the MacBook Air, my answer for more than a year has been either the Lenovo IdeaPad 730S or the two-in-one Yoga 730 generally because they cost less, but give you a similar look and feel and potentially better performance. They're just great ultraportables for normal, everyday home office or school work and the Lenovo Yoga C740 is no different.&nbsp;The C740, available in 14- and 15.6-inch sizes, is the update to the Yoga 730. It falls in the middle of the current Yoga two-in-one convertible lineup with the C940 above and 13.3-inch C640 below. The 15.6-inch C740 is essentially the same as the 14-inch I tested, but with a larger display and a keyboard with a number pad. My configuration lists for $870, but Lenovo regularly runs sales on it and, at the moment, it's $730. A similar configuration is available in the UK for £681 and in Australia for AU$1,800.Less chin, more screenAt 3 pounds (1.4kg), the C740 is about a half pound heavier than its predecessor, but it also jumps from a 13.3-inch display to a 14-inch one. Oddly, though, their bodies are similar in size and the C740 is actually shorter because Lenovo eliminated much of the display's bottom bezel.&nbsp;The display itself has good color and brightness, though you'll still have to see past reflections outside or under bright office lighting. The 720p webcam above the screen has one of Lenovo's little sliding shutters that physically blocks the camera. And if you like using digital assistants, the C740 has far-field mics and Amazon Alexa support, too. You can access it even when you're not actively using the laptop. &nbsp;Lenovo offers a few configurations of the C740 that include a choice of 10th-gen Core i5 or i7 processors (Comet Lake, not&nbsp;Ice Lake&nbsp;architecture), up to 16GB of memory, integrated UHD 630 graphics and up to 1TB SSD PCIe storage.&nbsp;My configuration was perfect for typical work and entertainment use, and battery life was impressive at more than 11 hours on our streaming video test. You might want to get 16GB of memory to help with multitasking, though. The memory is soldered on, which means you can't add more post-purchase. Storage, on the other hand, can be increased on your own easily enough.&nbsp;Stay with C740 or go up to the C940?&nbsp;Most people looking for a general-purpose laptop will be well served with the Yoga C740, even if you never intend to use it as a tablet. The display is pen-enabled, however, so if you decide you want to use it for casual sketches or note-taking, you'll just need to pick up a pen.&nbsp;On the other hand, if you know you want a pen, the C940, which starts at $1,250, comes with one and it has a storage and charging garage built into the laptop's body. It also has Thunderbolt 3 support for its USB-C ports, whereas the C740 does not. Sound is better on the C940 also, thanks to its soundbar hinge that delivers clear audio regardless of the screen position, and it has 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) wireless, which gives you a little futureproofing, assuming you haven't already jumped to the latest wireless standard. Lastly, you can get it configured with a six-core Core i7 processor and an UHD (3,840x2,160 pixel) HDR 400 display.&nbsp;Those are the main differences between the two and, for me, they're things that are nice to have, but not necessities considering the price difference. With the Yoga C740, you're still walking away with an excellent two-in-one for the money.&nbsp;

The HP Pavilion x360 14 comes in two colors: Warm Gold and Mineral Silver. Like the previous generation, it's two-tone, but instead of including a neutral color on the inside of the PC, it uses a complementary color. The Warm Gold model that HP sent me has a Luminous Gold interior, which is also known as a lighter shade of gold. You'll notice that the metallic HP logo on the lid is that circular one, which is the one for lower-end PCs. For some reason, HP has a different logo for premium devices. The chassis is made entirely out of aluminum, and the bottom panel is attached with only two Phillips-head screws. It has what HP calls an hourglass design, with angular edges on all sides. This makes the lid easy to open with one hand on the sides or in the front. The HP Pavilion x360 14 has a wide selection of ports, and this pleases me. I'll explain why in a moment. My predecessor Hardik had reviewed the HP Spectre x360in October last year. In his review he had mostly good things to say about the premium convertible laptop. In particular, he spoke highly of the Spectre x360’s solid build and tasteful design. This year, the x360 convertible laptop in question is not a Spectre but a Pavilion. Many of us already know that Pavilion is HP’s Home and Home Office range of laptops and desktops. Pavilion machines are generally reliable and cost-effective. So, that should mean that the Pavilion x360 should have the same convertible advantage from last year’s Spectre x360 while retaining those fine Pavilion qualities, yes? Let’s find out if it does. 

Coming to the screen, the review unit we received (HP Pavilion x360 14-ba073TX) sported a 14-inch display with support for touch for easy use. The resolution carried here is 1080x1920 pixels (full HD), which in our opinion is decent enough for a 14-incher.
