Like the PowerShot G5 X II announced at the same time, the PowerShot G7 X Mark II has a 20.1Mp 1-inch type stacked CMOS sensor. This is a new sensor design for Canon and combined with the Canon Digic 8 processing engine, it enables very fast continuous shooting rates. Again like the PowerShot G5 X II, the G7 X III can shoot at up to 30fps (frames per second) in RAW Burst Mode for up to 70 images. Alternatively, it can shoot at 20fps for up to 89 C-RAW files, 55 RAW images or 118 Jpegs. This sensor is fronted by an 8.8 – 36.8mm f/1.8-2.8 stabilised lens which has a 35mm focal length equivalence of 24 – 100mm. The 24mm end is a good option for arm’s-length video when looking at the screen flipped-up above the camera. The large aperture also enables the background to be blurred a little.

The Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is a super-zoom camera with DSLR-styling, 20 Megapixel resolution and a 65x optical zoom range equivalent to 21-1365mm. Announced in September 2018, it’s the long-awaited successor to the enormously popular SX60 HS released four years earlier. 

The SX70 HS has 20.3 megapixels, 25% more than its predecessor, the 16.1MP SX60 HS, that should produce detailed files that lend themselves well both to larger prints and to the rigours of post processing. Sensibly, Canon has included a stabilizing element in the lens and it proves its worth.

Canon PowerShot SX70 HS – Performance The SX70 HS powers up in less than a second and shuts down in a similar time, although the latter does depend on the position of the zoom. 

The most noticeable upgrades are the image and video resolution. On the image front, the SX70 HSsports a 20.1MP sensorCanon smartly made it 4k capable, thanks largely in part to the new DIGIC 8 image processor. The increased processing power and speed also allows the new camera to capture images at 10fps, an upgrade of 3.9fps from the previous model. Once I got the SX70 HS out of the box, the first thing I noticed is that it felt slightly smaller and lighter than other superzoom cameras — especially the almost ridiculously oversized Nikon COOLPIX P1000which many people compare it to. Still, it manages to not be so light that it feels too cheap. The new rocker switch on the left side of the lens is a good backup option to the classic dial around the shutter button. Not only does it give you a second button to use for zoom, but you can also assign it to control the manual focus distance, something that is somewhat handy at times. The Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is a bridge camera. That means it combines some of the features of an interchangeable lens camera with those of a compact camera. So while it is fairly compact and has a fixed zoom lens, it looks like a small SLR. The ace in the PowerShot SX70 HS’s sleeve, however, is its 65x zoom range. The new Nikon Coolpix A1000 replaces the previous A900 model from 2016, principally adding an EVF, two extra zoom controls, touchscreen control and RAW recording. In terms of size and weight, the A1000 is subsequently slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessor, measuring 114.2 x 71.7 x 40.5mm and weighing 330g, but we feel that this slight increase is worth it given the inclusion of the EVF. Or it would be, if the EVF wasn't quite such a disappointment. Maybe we've been spoiled by the viewfinder on the admittedly much more expensive Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI, but the one of the Coolpix A1000 only has half the resolution, 1166k-dots versus 2350k-dots on the Sony, in the same 0.5cm sized viewfinder. This results in a rather grainy display that is really only suitable for light, rather than all-day, use. This is a lens so long that we were able to fill the frame with a 1 meter (3.3 foot) tall monkey that's 70 meters (230 feet) away. This does come at a cost, though. 

The Nikon A1000 touts more than just a zoom that a smartphone can’t compete with — the camera is packed with physical controls and design features that are tough to find on budget cameras (and impossible to find on phones). The controls feel more like a mirrorless camerathan a point-and-shoot. Despite the abundance of controls, the A1000 weighs in at a light 11.7 ounces. At 1.6 inches deep and 4.5 inches tall, the camera can slide into most coat or cargo pockets. The wider girth and a small grip at the side makes the camera a bit more comfortable to shoot with than a smartphone. The lens requires a small protrusion at the front of the camera even when closed, but that space is put to good use, with a secondary zoom toggle and button on the lens barrel.
