Such is its chunkiness, the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K might be more accurately referred to as a branch. Compared to a more traditionally shaped streamer such as the Apple TV 4K, this is a far more compact design, but at 10cm long the Fire TV Stick 4K will protrude from the edge of many TVs when plugged into a sideways-facing socket. Plugging it in next to other cables can be a real squeeze too. There is, at least, an HDMI extender in the box that can help with the latter issue as well as improving the wi-fi performance – although we had no issues with wi-fi without it. You can also hardwire the Fire TV Stick 4K to your router by adding the optional ethernet adapter. As well as being physically bigger than most sticks, the Fire TV Stick 4K also draws more power, to the extent that you should use the USB wall plug that comes in the box rather than running the cable into one of your TV’s own sockets – though we tried it both ways during testing and spotted no difference in performance. You can get a Fire TV Stick 4K and bundle it with a new Amazon Echo Dot and have all the hands-free fun you want, for a full $40 less than a Fire TV Cube. If you don't need a 4K-capable Fire TV device — I'd still recommend this one. 

The Fire TV Stick 4K has a basic rectangle design with the signature Amazon smile logo on it. The device uses a 1.7Ghz quad-core processor, dual-band Wi-Fi (MIMO) and because of all that beefy processing power, it can easily handle the 4K video. Amazon also offers an Ethernet Adapter for their Fire TV devices, in case you don’t want to rely on Wi-Fi for your Fire TV Stick 4K. The Fire TV Stick 4K is compatible with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ plus Dolby Atmos sound. The actual device is fairly long, so much that you may not be able to plug it into the back of your TV. If your TV’s HDMI ports are facing to the sides like they are on the TCL 6-Series Roku TV, you may need to use an HDMI extender or an HDMI hub (capable of 4K video output). Thankfully, Amazon does include an HDMI extender included in the box, to help circumvent issues with plugging it into your TV’s HDMI ports. Given that it’s a device intended to plug into the back (or side) of your TV, Amazon hasn’t felt the need to go to town where the design of the Fire TV Stick 4K is concerned. There’s nothing wrong with the way it’s made, and – given the utter lack of moving, or even illuminated, parts – it should last for years. By the standards of media streaming sticks, though, it’s on the chunky side. If the TV you’re trying to make smarter has its HDMI sockets on the side, the Fire TV Stick 4K may well be visible behind the frame. And if they’re on the back, you may need to make use of the bundled HDMI socket extender.

The Amazon ecosystem is great, but the device does not have Vudu, YouTube TV, or the Google Play Store. This is somewhat disappointing because this device is the least expensive device that contains Dolby Vision.
