Apple is an American technology company known for selling phones, headphones, laptops, tablets, watches, and more. Their speakers offer great voice assistant support with Siri built-in, and if you're an iOS user, they make a great addition to your Apple ecosystem. Since they're designed for home use, these speakers aren't very portable due to their wired design and need to remain plugged into an outlet to work. Unfortunately, while the Apple HomePod can even operate as a soundbar for your Apple TV, the manufacturer discontinued this speaker.

The Apple HomePod mini is a small spherical home speaker with Siri built-in. It has a balanced mid-range out-of-the-box, so voices and lead instruments reproduce clearly and with detail, though they sound dark at times. Unfortunately, it lacks sound customization features like a graphic EQ and presets, so you can't customize its sound to better suit your preferences. That said, its directivity is outstanding thanks to its 360-degree design, so its soundstage is perceived as open and spacious. Also, the speaker can be paired to another HomePod speaker when you want to create a stereo pair or to multiple other speakers when you want to play different audio in different rooms of your home at the same time.

The Apple HomePod mini is the best voice assistant speaker for iPhone that we've tested. This small spherical home speaker comes with Siri built-in and is excellent at registering your commands from far away, though it has a bit more trouble picking up your voice in noisier settings. I don't understand what I'm missing here -- I see all these glowing reviews of the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, but I cannot for the life of me get mine working reliably with HomeKit. 

First of all, **August's HomeKit setup instructions flat out do not work**. They instruct to set up the lock through their app, and then to enable HomeKit through their app -- not the Home app. Since the lock apparently only works on HomeKit over Bluetooth (sounds like this is an Apple-enforced thing), I've placed my hub, a HomePod Mini, right next to the lock when trying to pair per August's instructions. Without fail, attempting to enable HomeKit via the August app gives a 'Failed to Pair' message

I've had sporadic success getting the lock to pair by instead adding it through the Home app and *then* viewing its HomeKit settings in the August app. When I'm able to get this far, the lock state seems to be successfully communicated to the Home app (sends notifications when locking, unlocking, etc).

 It also has what apple calls an acoustic wave guide that channels audio, so the homepod mini sounds the same all the way around speaker, even though homepod mini, does sound great. It'S not the clear winner for best small smart speaker. There are popular music services missing and siri still isn't as good as other voice assistants, then there's homekit, homepod mini is a home kit hub, but the number of compatible devices is low compared to other smart home platforms at twice the price of other small smart speakers. Homepod mini needs to be worth that extra cash for apple enthusiasts

Apple HomePod Mini review: Apple's small speaker delivers big sound

 Inside, we see the HomePod Mini box, this is a small but hefty cube, and then lifting the lid reveals the HomePod Mini inside. Now, it comes in five colors, including the whites that I have here. I like the whites, it almost looks like a snowball, probably the closest thing to snow that we'll be getting this year in London. First impressions, it definitely has some heft for its size, feeling substantial in the hand

 And then sitting underneath, we have some paperwork, including a quick start guide as well as a single Apple sticker. And then lastly, we get Apple's 20 watt USB-C power brick, it is good to see this included. And then attached to the HomePod is a USB-C cable. Now, while this is not detachable, it is a nice and braided cable that also has a decent length of around five feet

 The mics can be muted through the HomePod Mini settings in the Apple Home app, but not through a hardware switch. Now maybe Apple has done enough with its marketing and technology stack around privacy where it's earned your trust and this is not going to be that big of a deal to you, or it may be. Now personally, I rarely use the mute switch on my Google Assistant speaker so this isn't that big of a downside to me, but again, it may be to you. So that's the HomePod Mini

Apple's new HomePod mini, a $99 alternative to the larger, more powerful $299 HomePod, competes primarily against the $99 orb-like Amazon Echo (4th Generation) and the non-spherical $99 Google Nest Audio. If audio is your top priority, Apple's speaker is outperformed by Amazon's, as well as some other, non-smart wireless models in the $100 price range&mdash;the HomePod mini delivers solid, clean mono audio, but the Echo is substantially larger and more powerful, offering a stronger sense of bass response.  The only thing I dislike is the price, however it is an apple product and you are also getting a really good quality device and speaker so take of it what you will.

The HomePod Mini has a fantastic, HUGE, sound from such a small body. The bass is a good balance, not too much and not too little. Although it obviously is going to work more smoothly with Apple Music with it being an Apple product, you can still use popular music services like Spotify, Pandora, and YouTube Music. Siri does have some improving to do, but I have no doubt Siri will continued to be updated

You have the option of allowing the HomePod to access your messages, reminders, calendar events, and other information when your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the HomePod.
