Feb 09, 2021 ·  The Leica Q (Typ 116), released back in 2016, was a sleeper hit for Leica, when the famed camera company took a risk in introducing something as niche as a fixed-lens, full-frame camera. Fast forward three years and we now have the Q2, with improvements that made the already excellent camera, even better. 

There was a time when the majority of compact cameras used 35mm film. Which means they were full-frame cameras. Making a full-frame digital compact camera is a bit more involved, so they’re not common and they’re quite a bit more expensive. The Leica Q2 is set to retail for £4,250 (over $5000), for example, and the 42Mp Sony RX1R II has an RRP of £3,450/$3,299. So what’s the big deal about a full-frame sensor? Well, it allows the photoreceptors (also referred to as pixels) to be larger than they would be on a smaller sensor. That means that they gather more light so less gain needs to be applied and the image quality is better. Or, in the case of the Leica Q2, it enables more pixels to be squeezed onto the sensor while still enabling each on to gather enough light to produce high-quality images. For stills, it might only be a 12.1MP sensor but it is a full-frame camera, so that offers significant low-light benefits. Apr 13, 2021 ·  The Sony A7S III — a video-focused full-frame multi-hyphenated camera with a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. Woah, that’s a mouthful. Though, there’s not enough good things to say about this powerful new beast that just hit the market. 

When it comes to its ergonomics, the A7 III features Sony’s latest generation mirrorless body design which brings it up to date with its siblings: the A7R III and A9. The refinements to the controls and design make the A7 III appreciably easier to handle than the A7 II. The camera fits nicely in the hand, with an improved grip size making it much more comfortable to shoot with, particularly when using larger lenses. Perhaps just as important, the larger grip size also leaves more room for Sony’s enhanced Z-type battery which when used alongside the A7 III, offers the longest battery life seen on a mirrorless camera to date. Measuring 127 x 96 x 74 mm (5.0 x 3.78 x 2.5 in) and weighing 650g (22.93 oz) including battery, the A7 III is a bit bigger than its predecessor but remains highly compact when compared to a full-frame DSLR camera body.
