The new Nikon Coolpix A1000 replaces the previous A900 model from 2016, principally adding an EVF, two extra zoom controls, touchscreen control and RAW recording. In terms of size and weight, the A1000 is subsequently slightly bigger and heavier than its predecessor, measuring 114.2 x 71.7 x 40.5mm and weighing 330g, but we feel that this slight increase is worth it given the inclusion of the EVF. Or it would be, if the EVF wasn't quite such a disappointment. Maybe we've been spoiled by the viewfinder on the admittedly much more expensive Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI, but the one of the Coolpix A1000 only has half the resolution, 1166k-dots versus 2350k-dots on the Sony, in the same 0.5cm sized viewfinder. This results in a rather grainy display that is really only suitable for light, rather than all-day, use. This is a lens so long that we were able to fill the frame with a 1 meter (3.3 foot) tall monkey that's 70 meters (230 feet) away. This does come at a cost, though. 

The Nikon A1000 touts more than just a zoom that a smartphone can’t compete with — the camera is packed with physical controls and design features that are tough to find on budget cameras (and impossible to find on phones). The controls feel more like a mirrorless camerathan a point-and-shoot. Despite the abundance of controls, the A1000 weighs in at a light 11.7 ounces. At 1.6 inches deep and 4.5 inches tall, the camera can slide into most coat or cargo pockets. The wider girth and a small grip at the side makes the camera a bit more comfortable to shoot with than a smartphone. For stills, it might only be a 12.1MP sensor but it is a full-frame camera, so that offers significant low-light benefits. And it can shoot compressed or uncompressed raw files at 10fps for up to 1000 shots.

Apr 13, 2021 ·  The Sony A7S III — a video-focused full-frame multi-hyphenated camera with a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. Woah, that’s a mouthful. Though, there’s not enough good things to say about this powerful new beast that just hit the market. 

When it comes to its ergonomics, the A7 III features Sony’s latest generation mirrorless body design which brings it up to date with its siblings: the A7R III and A9. The refinements to the controls and design make the A7 III appreciably easier to handle than the A7 II. The camera fits nicely in the hand, with an improved grip size making it much more comfortable to shoot with, particularly when using larger lenses. Perhaps just as important, the larger grip size also leaves more room for Sony’s enhanced Z-type battery which when used alongside the A7 III, offers the longest battery life seen on a mirrorless camera to date. Measuring 127 x 96 x 74 mm (5.0 x 3.78 x 2.5 in) and weighing 650g (22.93 oz) including battery, the A7 III is a bit bigger than its predecessor but remains highly compact when compared to a full-frame DSLR camera body.
