The Galaxy S20 Plus features a near-identical design to the regular Galaxy S20, the only obvious differences being its slightly larger dimensions and the fact it comes with 5G as standard – which is the biggest contributor to its higher price tag. If like us, you’re fans of Samsung’s recent phone designs this is no bad thing and the Plus will instantly feel familiar and at home in your hand. For your money, you’ll be treated to a super premium mixed metal and glass phone with a close to unnoticeable all-screen front and slightly curved sides. This, plus its sensible 6.7-inch form factor make it wonderfully comfortable to hold and hit what I would describe as the sweet spot for phone sizes. It’s large enough to watch movies, game and read books on, without feeling cumbersome – which is a key issue we had with the larger, Galaxy S20 Ultra. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus is not a beautiful smartphone, but it’s a maturely crafted, well proportioned mobile device. This understated phone isn’t for showing off unless you get it in the pretty cloud blue color. In the black or gray seen here, it won’t turn heads, but you can be smug about using one of the most refined phones you can buy at the moment. What do I mean? The 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen isn’t heavily curved down the side of the phone, but the 3D glass over the top is beautifully shaped at each corner to give the front of the phone a modern shape that’s comfortable to hold. Down the right-hand side is the power button and volume rocker, and rather than being just sandwiched between the chassis and the glass, the metal bodywork tracks around them. While the Galaxy S20 Plus’ style can be appreciated, it’s not for everyone. The Galaxy S20 Plus is well designed, fits easily in my hand, and doesn't feel cumbersome or too big despite having a 6.7-inch display. The display has a centered hole punch cutout for the front-facing camera. With an almost bezel-free design, the screen of the S20 Plus leaves plenty of space to use apps in split-screen mode to, for instance, copy information from an email to a spreadsheet or word doc. After setting up the S20 Plus, I immediately turned on Android 10's gesture navigation, which ditches the traditional three-button navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, giving me even more real estate to use. Getting used to using gestures took about a day, but now I have no issues swiping in from either side to go back, or swiping up to go to the home screen (among other gestures). There are only two -- well, I guess, technically three -- buttons on the perimeter of the S20 Plus. All three are on the right side of the phone, with a volume rocker near the top, and then a sleep/w... 

After a week testing the S20 Ultra, switching to the S20 and S20 Plus felt like blessed relief to my arms and fingers. The smaller handsets are much more manageable, both in terms of weight and screen size. My personal preference is the 6.2-inch S20, which is much easier to type on with one hand. But those with bigger hands probably won't mind the 6.7-inch S20+. Regardless of the size you pick, this year's flagships are slightly curvier and have softer lines than the boxy S10s, which make them easier to hold. They're not the most inspired designs, but these are still the classiest Android flagships you'll find right now. The OnePlus 7T Pro has an attractive finish but lacks the subtle curves, and the Pixel 4's minimalist style is unique but doesn't feel as premium. Huawei's P seriesmight be the only phones (barring iPhones) that offer a similarly elegant build, but you can't buy them in the US.

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ ticks almost all the boxes in terms of features and capabilities one would want in a premium flagship. As the middle child in Samsung’s S series lineup, the proposition offered by the Galaxy S20+ does get slightly diluted, thanks to the presence of the more accomplished Galaxy S20 Ultra, but that doesn’t take anything away from the fact that the S20+ is a capable device that offers smooth performance, a great set of shooters and a usage experience that’s quite premium. It doesn’t come cheap though.
