TCL isn’t exactly a huge name in smartphones, and you probably know it more for its TVs and soundbars, but in the last few years, it’s made a bigger push into the mobile market. The TCL 20 Pro 5G is the top phone of its family, part of the second generation of devices since TCL started using its own name on its phones. Launched alongside the TCL 20L and 20L Plus, and just after the 20 SE and 20 5G, this is probably the most premium phone TCL has put out under its own name, though there’s not much competition for that title. Most worthwhile mid-range phones offer premium specs but with corners cut, usually in the design department; we often see powerful phones with ugly bodies, or great camera phones with cheap-feeling plastic shells. The TCL 20 Pro 5G, however, does something a bit different; it doesn’t fully stand out in terms of most of its specs, with a processor and camera that are just ‘fine’, but it has a captivating design and some impressive display technology which makes it...

The big screen is a bit tall for some consumers to use comfortably, but videos look fantastic on its huge AMOLED display. 

The TCL 20 Pro 5G is most definitely a slice of smartphone nostalgia, in that we’ve seen phones that look like this before. It’s 8.8mm thin and tapers down to a relatively sharp point on either side of the slim, 20:9 aspect ratio screen. A polished section on the matte black glass rear panel gives it some character, repeating a design we’ve seen before on the Huawei P30 Pro, but here the camera lenses are flush with the body. It’s reminiscent not just of Huawei’s phone, but also older devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Oppo Find X2 Pro, and various Samsung Galaxy phones including the Galaxy S8. While the design is very pretty and the width makes it easy to hold and use with one hand, it comes with the same issues those phones did a few years ago — it’s delicate, it slides off absolutely everything, and the sides make it uncomfortable to grip. At 190 grams, it’s lighter than many modern large phones though. There is a transparent TPU case included in the box, and I did feel the need...

To put that into perspective, it’s on par with the Realme 7 5G and the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, but $150 more than the current cheapest 5G phone, the OPPO A54 5G. 

Based solely on appearances, the 20 Pro 5G is the nicest phone TCL has ever made. It looks and feels like a premium piece of hardware, particularly on the backside. The phone has a glass back other similarly priced phones, but TCL gave the panel a slick two-tone finish. The side with the camera sensors is glossy, and the rest has a matte texture. There's still enough of that matte glass to lessen fingerprint build-up and improve grip, though. I also like how the four camera sensors are all lined up under the glass panel—that's right, there's no camera hump. The display has an aggressive curve on the left and right edges—it's about the same radius as Samsung's Edge phones from a couple of years ago. I don't personally like curved screens because they even make the phone less comfortable to hold and edge touches are never completely eliminated.
