Full review It’s been almost four years since the original PowerShot G5 X was released so its Mark II successor, which was announced in July, is welcome. The new camera is pitched at much the same consumer level as its predecessor, although it’s a little less likely to appeal to serious enthusiasts. 

Summary The Canon PowerShot G5X Mark II is a powerful compact camera with a 20 Megapixel 1in sensor, 5x / 24-120mm zoom, popup viewfinder, tilting touchscreen, fast bursts and 4k video. Canon’s made a U-turn on design, swapping the chunkier DSLR-styling of its predecessor for something more pocketable and more akin to Sony’s RX100 series.

The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II has been launched at the same time as the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III, and comes with the same new ‘stacked’ CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 processor, to allow a step-change in video recording capabilities, up from full HD to 4K, plus improved high-ISO performance, and an unusual fully-automatic 30fps burst mode which captures images in Canon’s own highly efficient CR3 RAW format. 

Sometimes you just gel with a camera and the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is one of those cameras for me. I love it. It’s small enough to slip in a jacket pocket yet has a viewfinder built-in, an excellent control arrangement and a flip-up touchscreen. It’s also 4K-enabled without a crop factor and it captures great images. If I was being really picky, I’d like a mic port, and it would be lovely if it was weatherproof. But even without those points, I think it’s a great little camera.

The image sensor used in the X-S10, the X-T4 and the X-Pro3 cameras is exactly the same - they all use the very latest 26 megapixel APS-C sized BSI X-Trans sensor. All three cameras also share exactly the same X-Processor 4 processor. So now Fujifilm are offering you not one, not two, but three different ways to achieve exactly the same image quality. You can choose between the rangefinder design of the X-Pro3 or the DSLR design of the X-T4 and X-S10, and between the larger X-T4 and the smaller X-S10, and still get the same results. Physically it sits between the X-H and X-T series, looking like those two camera ranges have been merged together to create the new X-S series.
