Full review It’s been almost four years since the original PowerShot G5 X was released so its Mark II successor, which was announced in July, is welcome. The new camera is pitched at much the same consumer level as its predecessor, although it’s a little less likely to appeal to serious enthusiasts. 

Summary The Canon PowerShot G5X Mark II is a powerful compact camera with a 20 Megapixel 1in sensor, 5x / 24-120mm zoom, popup viewfinder, tilting touchscreen, fast bursts and 4k video. Canon’s made a U-turn on design, swapping the chunkier DSLR-styling of its predecessor for something more pocketable and more akin to Sony’s RX100 series.

The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II has been launched at the same time as the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III, and comes with the same new ‘stacked’ CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 processor, to allow a step-change in video recording capabilities, up from full HD to 4K, plus improved high-ISO performance, and an unusual fully-automatic 30fps burst mode which captures images in Canon’s own highly efficient CR3 RAW format. 

Sometimes you just gel with a camera and the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is one of those cameras for me. I love it. It’s small enough to slip in a jacket pocket yet has a viewfinder built-in, an excellent control arrangement and a flip-up touchscreen. It’s also 4K-enabled without a crop factor and it captures great images. If I was being really picky, I’d like a mic port, and it would be lovely if it was weatherproof. But even without those points, I think it’s a great little camera.

For stills, it might only be a 12.1MP sensor but it is a full-frame camera, so that offers significant low-light benefits. Apr 13, 2021 ·  The Sony A7S III — a video-focused full-frame multi-hyphenated camera with a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. Woah, that’s a mouthful. Though, there’s not enough good things to say about this powerful new beast that just hit the market. 

When it comes to its ergonomics, the A7 III features Sony’s latest generation mirrorless body design which brings it up to date with its siblings: the A7R III and A9. The refinements to the controls and design make the A7 III appreciably easier to handle than the A7 II. The camera fits nicely in the hand, with an improved grip size making it much more comfortable to shoot with, particularly when using larger lenses. Perhaps just as important, the larger grip size also leaves more room for Sony’s enhanced Z-type battery which when used alongside the A7 III, offers the longest battery life seen on a mirrorless camera to date. Measuring 127 x 96 x 74 mm (5.0 x 3.78 x 2.5 in) and weighing 650g (22.93 oz) including battery, the A7 III is a bit bigger than its predecessor but remains highly compact when compared to a full-frame DSLR camera body.
